A 2012 study found that 73% of 25- to 35-year-olds chronically overthink
Now 11 years later with the continued unrelenting march of technology and social media..
The number is almost certainly even higher
The constant nattering neuroses of the mind that seem to bombard us throughout the day:
”I need to do XYZ”
”I shouldn’t have said X”
”Why didn’t I become a bloody Doctor when I had the chance!?”
”What if no one really likes me”
The sheer frequency of thoughts leaves us feeling utterly overwhelmed and underrested
It becomes so habitual that even the moments of gentle rest:
- Time with our families or partners
- Days off at the weekend
- On holiday
Seem to be marred by this inability to switch off the mind when we no longer require it’s services
It is as the old adage goes:
”The mind is an amazing tool, but a terrible master”
But what if there a super simple way to start to find immediate peace from the never-ending stories, descriptions, judgements and criticisms?
I’m going to dive in to a super high-leverage technique I teach clients with spectacular results:
1. I call this technique “Divine Disinterest”
You see - It’s not a problem that the thoughts occur - It’s only when we get swept up in them that they cause us to suffer
When we believe the bullshit
But what if you just stopped caring about the content of the mind..
And instead observed it’s content from a place of detached awareness?
Let’s do a little exercise:
”I AM anxious”
”I AM happy”
”I AM sad”
”I AM envious”
”I AM full of pride”
”I AM full of shame”
What’s the constant here?
That’s right..
It’s the sense of “I AM”
Of pure being
Everything else is an abstraction - Constantly shifting and changing depending on an infinite number of factors..
Behind all of which the sense of “I AM” remains unchanged:
”To know harmony is to know the changeless;
to know the changeless is to have insight.
Things in harmony with the Tao remain”
The sky does not cling to the color of the clouds, or mistakenly identify with their content
Nor should you allow redundant and fabricated narratives to dictate your mental state
Simply observe the content as it arises from this place of “I AM”
> Recognize when you’re caught up in a narrative
> Relax back into a spacious sense of “I AM” pure awareness by :
- Mentally chanting “I AM” + Relaxing your gaze
(become aware of what’s in your peripheral awareness)
- Grounding awareness in the body
- Anchoring it there with the breath
(Long, soft and smooth breaths)
- Feeling a sense of expansion
- Gently smiling
See if you can operate from this space - When a thought arises - Simply pay it no mind - Just allow it to arise and pass away back into the field of “I AM” ness
One of the most famed and beloved teachers from India - Nisargadatta Maharaj - had this to say:
“Q: How am I to think myself out when my thoughts come and go as they like. Their endless chatter distracts and exhausts me.
M: Watch your thoughts as you watch the street traffic. People come and go; you register without response.
It may not be easy in the beginning, but with some practice you will find that your mind can function on many levels at the same time and you can be aware of them all.
It is only when you have a vested interest in any particular level, that your attention gets caught in it and you black out on other levels.
Now as Maharaj states - This is not always easy in the beginning - But it is possible
And here’s the thing..
Each thought has a certain amount of “fuel”
Each time you give it no mind and allow it to pass through your mind without clinging on..
You exhaust a bit of that fuel
Eventually all the fuel is burned up and the mind naturally becomes quiet and calm
Is this also possible for you?
Well..
After 4 weeks my client is experiencing profound change on the level of mind + consciousness utilizing this technique
(Admittedly - We use a range of other high-leverage techniques in the program)
And what you’ll find by practicing in this way is that with this newfound calm..
You suddenly find yourself:
- 10x’ing your energy
- Finding a renewed sense of purpose
- Tapping into states of awe and joy you experienced in childhood
- Showing up powerfully as a leader, partner and parent
- Free of the constant criticism, judgment and resulting lack of self-worth
There are many ways to arrive at this point of calm, grounded presence - This state of “being” and “knowing”
Where results happen without effort
And you’re able to operate from a place of inherent wholeness and peace
This state of consciousness is profound - And with further practice can lead you all the way to the 500 level described by Dr.David Hawkins
And for me?
My personal goal for all clients is to set them up with the tools within 90 days to move toward the 500-level
This is how this point is described:
”The 500 level is characterized by the development of a Love that is unconditional, unchanging and permanent. It does not fluctuate because its source within the person who loves is not dependent on external conditions. Loving is a state of being
It is a way of relating to the world that is forgiving, nurturing, and supportive. Love is not intellectual and it does not proceed from the mind. Love emanates from the heart. It has the capacity to lift others and accomplish great feats because of its purity of motive.”
Once you’re at this state - You’ve already “made it”
Cultivating this “divine disinterest” in the mind’s content is one step forward that can help rekindle the light of hope in your mind and heart..
That true peace and contentment can be your reality
